My Palace is up and running, downloads are slow

Hi,

I have a working installation of Palace, but the downloads are very slow, I was using the Mac Palace server and all was fine (downloads in 1 to 2 seconds), but its too unstable under classic mode (kept crashing). So I went to the Linux server client and its taking 15 to 30 seconds to download backgrounds even to my own local client. I tried to use the HTTPD server that came with the tarball but it would not execute for some reason. So I build my own Apache2 HTTPD server and having only to moidy the LISTEN keyword the HTTPD-CONF worked fine. Still no luck with faster downloads. Worse some of my users are reporting No dowload or a black screen is all they get on some rooms.

Running OpenSuze 10.2 on an Athlon XD chip with 1gb memory using a DSL broadband connection.

Any help appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Macore

Hi

Is your apache working properly and you can serve a website/ HTML pages from it? If so you can simply follow the "Home hosters: Serve your media from a website" howto and point it to your local website. Putting your media up on another website hosted on a big external server is off course another good alternative, saves you up-load bandwidth.

Hmm, no difference

OK, thanks for the reply.

I moved all my media onto my Apache file server running on a different computer on my LAN, axed the Apache server listening on Port 9990 from the linux box and pointed the Palace server to the new server.

Guess what? Didnt make a bit of difference,

I guess I dont understand why my Gallery of Poser art running off the same Apache server downloads much larger .JPEGs fine and these measly little .GIF files still take so long??? Do they still have to funnel through PSERVER, cant if simply forward the request to the Apache server and let it handle it?

Still slow,
Macore

Did you follow the instructions in the "Home hosters: Serve your media from a website" post??

If you type the following command: 'fileserver in your Palace, what does it say? If you did not follow the instructions properly your downloads will be as slow as ever because the Palace server will try to serve them up.

fileserver is pointed correctly

I ran the `fileserver command and it is now pointed to the correct server, which would have the same address as before. But now the path is slightly different and there is no port 9990 in the URL as expected...

Thanks,
Macore

Well there is not suppose to be any port 9990

Did it work? I mean are you getting good download speeds now?

No better

Sadly the download times are no better than before. I am still clueless, the same Web server runs my Gallery of Posesr images with .jgs 10 times the size and they come within a second, yet the small .gif files till take 10 to 20 seconds. Something funny going on there...

Thanks for your help,
Macore

http://gorpalace.dynalias.net/media

Which is of course where they are. That directory is a link to a 250gb external HD which now has all my Poser art and my palace .gif files on it.

The same Appache2 web server serves them both, the Gallery is Coppermine and you can see it just by typing http://gorpalace.dynalias.net/index.php

What do you think?

Thanks,
Macore

Well first you didn't put the trailing slash in. "Its important to have the / at the end or it won't work."

If that url would work it should be:
http://gorpalace.dynalias.net/media/

with the trailing slash it works and I get to see all your media (I would suggest putting a index.html file in there to cover up all the pr0n)

Without the / slash at the end it sends me here: http://www.mmac.local/media/

When i follow this link: http://gorpalace.dynalias.net/index.php I get this error:

Turns out the actual link is this: http://gorpalace.dynalias.net/coppermine/index.php

Like the explanation said: "If you want to check if the URL is correct just type 'fileserver the server will tell you where it tries to get your media from."

So please next time read all the instructions, it kinda sucks having to copy paste stuff just because you skipped it.

Just out of curiosity: why you using GIF? Was it your intention to make them look like that? If your having problems with the Palace Palette you can use jpg's. Anyway, these gif's load slow from your web because your poser jpg's are 5K the Palace background gif's are around 100K so 20x bigger :)
