DSL Connected Server Won't Download Pics

Have used the same Palace Server, over 500 rooms, Win32 Server revision 4.4 [Build:19], for years an years from Windows 98, running 256 Megs of ram on a 166 Mhz MMX processor, with a 56K modem connected to a standard ISP provider. And though a bit slow and laggy at times worked flawlessly with all guests.

Have built a totally new machine, 2 gigs of ram, pentium 2.53 Mhz processor, on a state of the art Gigabyte motherboard, but now also with a 10 Mbps DSL connection, a real screemer. Loaded the identical Palace Server version with the identical palace. Took some time to discover that the standard IP address which shows in Palace Server and Client upon boot is not the IP addy to give out, that it must be the DSL PPP Client IP addy. So now people can get to my Palace Server just fine, and have a field day.

Also, for the record, ICQ file transfers and shared files work just fine with no changed settings in the new system.

But one BIG problem, even with confirmation from regular guests that their Palace Client Edit => Preferences => Download Graphics box is checked to ON, picture files no longer download. So far this prob is a real showstopping bummer.

Is this a typical problem with DSL connections? Is there a fix?

Hi Uni

This is something a lot of my friends with DSL connections had problems with, it depends on the ISP I think. But sometimes its just port 9990 thats blocked and sometimes they just put in some timeout so you can't go play home ISP. There is an alternative for this: Put your media on a website that allows off-site linking.

Instructions for this are in the Palace Builders forum:

Perhaps not the answer your looking for but it is a solution :)

What you might check btw is if people do get the downloads after 8 or 10 minutes. This seems to be a common thing for slow DSL Palaces.

there is a way to set a different port number for your media uploads, perhaps try port 80??

Good luck 8)

Hi Uni.
Please check on the contract you have with your DSL ISP. I bed you are not allowed to run a web server! Now that is your problem. After all the entire window palace server is nothing more then an Apache web server. Running those are not allowed on most DSL connections. Why? Very simple, if you run a web server and support web space, you are in fact competition for the ISP you are using. Logical they don?t permit you to do this.

You see, the changing IP numbers are not really for your own protection also. Its just a way to prevent you to do just that. The reason you can use the palace server chatting is not something to wonder about! For this you use a different port, in most cases 9998.
Now palace uses HTTP to send you the pictures, and that is why it is not working. People like me, who work for big ISP and Software Company?s know our business to! LOL
The way Maarten told you about using a different place to have the pictures is a solution for this problem. There are ways to surround the web server problem to. But you have to find those from somebody else! This is a public forum and I am not allowed to show you tricks that can be used by our clients. :-P

Hi Maarten!
Yep its me, I told you I wood help but only when I have the time. Watt is not very often. Now this problem I gave direct attention, cause its most likely an ISP problem. Well not really a problem, it is just a protection the scripts of his ISP build in to prevent sharing of web space. This you will se more and more in the future and not without reason.
For example the company I work for, also provide web space on a commercial basis. But we also have a cheap connection formula. If we wood permit to have those customers to run web servers on there own computer, this wood arm the company. Cause they do the same, on the IP numbers we provide them. This is why we build in protection.
So the port 80 trick sure wont work in this case. I know it, so in our case it doesn?t work. Cause its possible the ISP of Uni don?t know? But in fact I don?t think so! People that support DSL mostly know most of the tricks.

Linda
