I credit the decline of the palace to the general rise of the internet's popularity, and the transition that came with that rise, between chatting with strangers as chic and exciting, and chatting with strangers as creepy and dangerous. I don't know when social networking began to take hold, but that might have contributed to it as well. The "magic" of the palace's early years wasn't limited to just the palace-- the whole internet was magical back then, as the only people on it were folks who were ahead of the curve. Anyone you encountered online was likely to be some shade of pioneer, and usually pretty adept. Once the masses began to seep in, it was all eventual.
I found the palace on a MacAddict disk that I got in the mail back in 1995, when I was in 7th grade. Purchased a membership for 20 or 30 dollars shortly thereafter, and spent most of my time between the mansion and cybertown. The Korn Palace was actually -after- my years there, so I missed it...but I do remember the skater AVs getting popular there for a while. I think those started with one dude who made a punk AV with baggy pants and a grey T shirt, that was slowly evolved upon, well before Korn got popular.
I remember romeo and juliet avatars as being one of the more popular themes :)
