Creating Avatars |
Jan 07, 2007 - 7:20 AM - by maarten

This article was provided by The Doll Palace - creator of doll makers and fashion dress up games for girls. For more information about cartoon dolls, avatars and The Doll Palace, visit http://www.thedollpalace.com/
Chat is all the rage these days, and the best way to keep in touch with friends, and maybe even family, is to use internet messengers like AIM or Yahoo. By using messengers or chat, you don’t have to break your phone curfew, but you can still talk to your friends. Other places that are fun to visit are forums, discussion boards, and sites- communities like MySpace. The greatest thing about these sites is the opportunity to personalize your screen name by using avatars. Avatars are those little pictures that pop up by your name when you type or post.
As your avatar is your self portrait in a sense, it should reflect who you really are – trendy, stylish, and beautiful. If you are anything like most of the girls in the world today, you probably change your mind about five times a day on what would truly reflect you, but there is a perfect solution for that – use online paper dolls. Use these online paper dolls, such as the ones you find at The Doll Palace (... [Read More]

Good Day Sir, May I Interest You In.... |
Jan 07, 2007 - 7:00 AM - by SuperScoop
|
The other day I realised that Palace was missing something. You might think it has just about everything in the way of characters I mean there's flirts, snerts, liars, psychos, drunks and...and oh yeah...really nice normal people who like a chat. But Palace has a blind spot. I mean, where are all the service personnel? A Palace is a sort of virtual building after all. So where are the essential services? Where are the other classic characters?
So with this in mind, I have decided to fill this much needed gap in the market. Progress has been good so far and my energetic morning, flitting from Palace to Palace, trying to sell double glazing was most rewarding. In the afternoon I became Palace's only Jehovah's Witness and handed out enlightening leaflets in Avatar Palace before a quick visit to Ties That Bind. This was extremely good fun and I think they only tied me up and spanked me as a display of friendship.
Selling palace 'Insurance' was my next adventure. It was the sort of Insurance that ensures that your Palace doesn't get burned down. I didn't actually sell any 'Protection Insurance' but I did get banned eight times (my best score yet) and I did strike up a remarkable conversation with a virtual criminal who wants to go into virtual business with me selling virtual stolen cell phones. So if your cell phone av went missing recently...I know where I can get one..know what I mean mate? I think it was shortly after this that I found The Lord and... [Read More]

Tears of a Clone |
Jan 07, 2007 - 6:59 AM - by SuperScoop
|
I make my own avatars and so when I get cloned (which I do!) I take it rather personally. This then leads to me getting annoyed, tracking the IP address, searching all the Palaces for the offender, finding them, befriending them under a false name, stalking them long enough to get their home address, then going round to their house and setting about them with a pair of pliers and a blow torch.
This, I admit, is a bad thing to do, no matter how satisfying it is in the short term. I know this, because the voices told me.
So in the interests of staying out of prison, for a short time at least, I decided to try and see the other person's point of view. I did this by venturing into the land of Squigglynames and asking cloners what it was all about. Why do you clone when there are thousands of avatars available? Why has no-one ever shown you how to make your own? And where do you live exactly? That sort of thing
The end result was both enlightening and a little depressing. From my extensive survey, conducted from a broad sample of two, I found out the following:-
Cloning someone's avatar is done for two reasons. The first is the most obvious. People clone avatars because they like them, they want that avatar you are wearing and just because you don't want to give it away, well that's just tough. In a way it is a form of flattery, because they want your creation so much they will go to the bother of stealing it.

Jbum interview by SuperScoop |
Jan 07, 2007 - 6:54 AM - by SuperScoop

Q. Many people on Palace have heard of you, but for those who don't know....What was your actual role in the creation and development of Palace? Could you give us an insight into your background and how you became involved? Also, what was the inspiration behind it?
A. I conceived, designed and programmed the
first version of the Palace when I was an employee of Time Warner, from 1994-1995. Initially, I worked with Damon Williams, who made most of the interior rooms in the "mansion" site. I programmed the Macintosh client/server (and later the Unix server). I made the smileys.
The Palace began as a personal project. I had used text-chat systems since the early 80's, and had experienced some (bad) 3D "virtual reality" systems of the early 90's, and I felt there was significant room between the two extremes to make something compelling, yet not prohibitively complex, engineering wise. I wanted to make something that would be fun, that I would enjoy personally, and therefore it would allow for a great degree of self expression.
I wrote a short proposal and gave it to Time Warner, which I called "The Game Palace" - this is the origin of the name. In the proposal, I took my original idea and... [Read More]

Palace Madness |
Jan 07, 2007 - 6:45 AM - by SuperScoop
|
(and other psychotic states)
The wonderful world of Palace Chat opens up a whole area of human behaviour that is just not available in real life. You can be whoever you want to be, dress in whatever clothing you like and explore any fantasy character you care to create. In real life, this luxury is normally confined to the mentally insane and professional actors; both of whom have a thin grasp of reality. Though of course, acting pays more.
This liberation from your body, background, gender and even species is extremely good fun and liberating. It allows you to cast off responsibility. It allows you to be beautiful, free, single, or the CEO of a Multi-National organisation. But it is so addictive that it is very easy to develop Palace Madness, of which, I confess dear reader, I was a victim.
Palace Madness occurs when the unreality of Palace begins to leak uncontrollably into your normal every day life. The first symptoms of my illness were when I went round an entire nightclub, checking the name tags of the bouncers to see if any of them were wearing a Wiz star, so that I could complain about the room being too bright and the fact that the Bots at the bar didn't work.
This, in itself was not too much of a problem. I hadn't yet realised that this was the beginning of Palace Madness. It was only when I started to look through my wardrobe, frantically looking for the prop bag button, that I knew something was... [Read More]

Palace and the Art of Conversation |
Jan 07, 2007 - 6:45 AM - by SuperScoop
|
When you first start on Palace, (cast your mind back….waaaay back) it is actually difficult to get any sensible conversation out of anyone. You may not recall this, if you are a hardened Veteran, because you know a few people now. But when you first started, you entered a room, waited a day or so for the picture to load, and then hid in a corner as quickly as possible. When your heart rate had recovered from the scary experience of landing in a room full of strangers you might then try a very tentative, "hi" and be absolutely amazed when someone went "hi" back.
Unfortunately this great exchange is as far as it goes. So what do you do now? You can't keep saying "hi" all night. Well, o.k. you can, and in fact that's all some people do. In fact I'm sure some folk go out of the room and come back again just so that someone will say "hi" or "wb" again. So…..How do you actually get people to talk to you?
Well, there is no mystery to this. It works just like in real life. You have to either say something interesting, provocative, or stupid. So here is my Quick Conversation Starters, and the expected result:-
QUICK CONVERSATION STARTERS:<brb> 1) "Who owns this Palace? It's really cool." This is guaranteed to make you some new friends even if the Palace is a heap of junk and made up of pictures stolen from other places. A Palace takes time to build/steal and everyone... [Read More]
